3 Helpful Tips For When Your Infant Has The Flu

When your infant has the flu it can be incredibly scary. They are so small, and you hate to see them throwing up. While you sometimes may feel helpless when it comes to making the pain and sickness go away, there are some things that you can do to help your child get through the flu. This article will include 3 helpful tips for when your infant has the flu. 

Try To Keep Liquids In Them

Although it may seem impossible because they are throwing up so much, you still need to try to keep liquids in them. Give them small amounts of an electrolyte drink for infants, or a sports drink. If they are able to keep about a tablespoon down for a few minutes, then you can give them a little bit more. You will also want to continue to nurse them or to give them formula. Both of these liquids are packed with the nutrients that your baby needs and can make a huge difference in their hydration levels. 

Check For Signs Of Dehydration Often

Since it is incredibly easy for an infant to become dehydrated, it is important to watch their hydration levels very closely when they have the flu. You will want to check their diaper to see if they have urinated. If there is no urine in their diaper within 8 hours, then you will need to take them to the doctor immediately. You will also want to watch their eyes to see if they have tears when they are crying; if not, this is another sign of dehydration. Lastly, you should check their skin. If you press your fingers against their skin and it turns white and stays white, this is another sign that they may be suffering from dehydration. 

Take Them To Urgent Care If It Is After Hours

If your doctor's office is closed for the day, then take your child to Urgent Care. You don't have to have an appointment when you take them to Urgent Care, and they stay open until fairly late at night. You will be able to meet with a doctor or physician's assistant when you take your baby into Urgent Care, and they will be able to give your baby a thorough examination and tell you what you should do. They may have you take them to the hospital if they are dehydrated, or they will give you some medicine to help with nausea, diarrhea, etc.
